We are pleased to share with you the mostrecent edition of PREAL’s Best Practices Series, No. 37, “Formación deliderazgo escolar: programas pioneros en Estados Unidos.”
This edition reviews three exemplary programs in the United Statesthat recruit, train, and retain highly qualified principals. These programstarget school principals with incentives to make the role attractive toqualified leaders.
The first program, New Leaders for New Schools, contains atwo-part program for aspiring principals including a rigorous selectionprocess, a four-week training period, and one year of residency in a school.Successful candidates for this program have experience as leaders in the schoolsystem. The second program, Broad Residency in Urban Education, consists of atwo-year training period with interactive seminars and focused projects,combining training with work experience in high levels of schooladministration. The third program, First Ring School Academy, was developed inresponse to the extreme shortage of qualified principals in an attempt toattract school leaders who will reform the education system in Cleveland areadistricts. Unlike the first two programs, this program recruits participantsfrom highly exceptional current teachers from within the local district. The15-month training emphasizes topics central to school management work and incorporatesinteraction with the school’s current principal. This program is beneficial inthat it uses the district’s own resources for its educational progress, leadersare selected with an understanding of local problems, and the relationshipsbetween school leaders and local authorities are strengthened.
