On October 4,PREAL Co-director Jeffrey Puryear and Associate for Education Alexandra Solanomet at the World Bank with the Mexican Under Secretary of Education, Lic.Miguel Ángel Martínez Espinosa, to discuss their recent paper (co-authored byLucrecia Santibañez of the RAND Corporation) on the state of education inMexico. The meeting was hosted by Erick Bloom, World Bank Senior Economist inthe Latin America Region, and included Mexico’s Sector Coordinator for EconomicDevelopment for Upper Secondary Education, Jesús Urzúa Macías, andAdministrative and Planning Coordinator for Upper Secondary Education, AlbertoGarcía de León.
The groupdiscussed the progress and challenges facing education in Mexico, along with aset of policy recommendations. The paper is part of a broader project, “A NewVision for Mexico 2042: Achieving Prosperity for All” carried out by theCentennial Group of Washington at the request of the Mexican businesscommunity, that will present Mexico’s political leaders with thirty proposalsdesigned to increase economic growth, enhance competitiveness and promoteinclusion over the next thirty years.
